The United Nations was founded on October 24, 1945 to replace its predecessor, the League of Nations. The UN has become a truly global organization, uniting almost all the states of the world. The purpose of the organization is to maintain and strengthen international peace, security, as well as the development of cooperation among nations.

It was the UN that adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, along with other universal and internationally recognized documents, which covered all fundamental human rights. The document is of great importance for humanity. It is noteworthy that it has been translated into more than 500 languages.

According to the Secretary-General, the United Nations Organization is the living embodiment of hope in every corner of the world:

“The UN lives in the heart and mind of every citizen as an organization capable of putting an end to violence, engraining tolerance, promoting and ensuring equality, protecting human rights and reducing poverty. Working at full capacity, the United Nations can promote the implementation of these high aspirations of humanity.”

In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, in which it encouraged Member States to observe this day as a public holiday. On this day, meetings, round tables and exhibitions are organised around the world in order to raise awareness of the UN main objectives and its achievements.

Currently, the UN includes 193 states; all of them are members of the UN General Assembly.
